Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Harness

The CSAR Rescue Harness is a purpose-built victim and rescue harness designed for Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), helicopter hoist operations, military freefall recovery, and civilian search and rescue missions. Engineered to perform under the most demanding operational conditions, it delivers a secure, comfortable fit for both the rescuer and victim — whether conducting a combat extraction, winch recovery over water, or emergency personnel lift.

Tested and certified to ANZS1891.1, ATSO-C1003 (TSO-C167 equivalent), and FAR 25.853 (b-2) flame resistance standards, the CSAR Rescue Harness meets the rigorous requirements of military and civil aviation authorities. Its one-size-fits-all design eliminates the need for multiple harness sizes in the field, reducing logistical burden and ensuring rapid deployment when every second counts.

Standout Performance

  • Easy to fit, one size fits all that comfortably secures the victim within the harness.
  • Weighs just under 6lbs (2.7kg).

Construction

  • Nomex FR Webbing
  • Woven Material FR
  • Stainless Steel Attachment Rings
  • Crotch Strap with 3-Action Stainless Steel Karabiner
  • Stainless Steel Non-Corrosive Fittings

Built for the Operational Environment

Traditional rescue harnesses are designed for controlled environments — the CSAR Rescue Harness is built for the chaos of real-world operations. Its Nomex FR webbing and woven FR materials resist ignition in high-heat environments, while stainless steel attachment rings and 3-Action stainless steel buckles ensure corrosion resistance and long service life in maritime, desert, and jungle environments alike. Weighing just under 5lbs (2.7kg), the harness is lightweight enough to be carried as standard kit without adding significant load to the operator. The high-impact waterproof case protects internal components through deployment, canopy, and landing — and its design ensures compatibility with existing flight helmets and NVG systems without interference or impedance at the attachment point.

Testing

The CSAR Rescue Harness meets ANZS1891.1, ATSO-C1003 (TSO-C167 equivalent), and FAR 25.853 (b-2) flame resistance standards.

Features

  • Lifting/Fall Arrest Point at top, rear of harness, ensures interfere-free attachment and impedance-free when wearing a flight helmet.
  • Victim Harness design also ensures a head-down position is highly unlikely and in any event a head-down position does occur, the victim remains securely located within the harness.
  • The Shoulder Strap design also ensures that in the event of any spin the straps remain located over the shoulders.
  • Ideally located attachment/lifting point at front of harness, which ensures the correct angle when suspended.
  • Sit/Recline (Super Nappy Type) angle design.
  • Natural reclined comfort position.
  • Low-cut neck scallop in Harness, to ensure no pressure is place at the base of the skull by the harness.
  • When fitting correctly, impossible to fallout of harness.

Why the CSAR Rescue Harness Works

The harness geometry is the result of deliberate engineering decisions that solve real problems in the field.

The Lifting/Fall Arrest Point is positioned at the top rear of the harness, ensuring the attachment is both interference-free and impedance-free when the victim is wearing a flight helmet — a critical detail often overlooked in standard commercial harnesses.

The Sit/Recline (Super Nappy Type) angle design places the victim in a natural reclined comfort position during hoist operations, significantly reducing the risk of suspension trauma during extended lifts. A low-cut neck scallop ensures no pressure is applied to the base of the skull — an important consideration during rotary wing extractions where vibration and movement are constant.

The Shoulder Strap design ensures that in the event of any rotation or spin during the hoist, the straps remain located over the shoulders and the victim cannot fall out of the harness. When fitted correctly, egress from the harness without deliberate action is effectively impossible.

Fitting of Harness

  • Ease of adjustment of the shoulder straps
  • Shoulder Strap design and the fitting through the buckles ensures the shoulder straps remain securely fitted throughout all facets of moving
  • Ease of adjustment of non-slip waist strap
  • Ergonomically designed Patient/Rescuer position during winch operations
